Kentucky doctor gets prison sentence for fentanyl, opioid prescriptions that led to fatal overdoses

A Kentucky doctor will spend one year in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally prescribing fentanyl and other opioid painkillers to her patients. Donation by fentanyl maker Insys to opponents of Arizona marijuana legalization law sparks criticism

Supporters of a proposed Arizona law that would decriminalize marijuana use have criticized a recent donation by Insys Therapeutics – the manufacturer of the fentanyl sublingual spray Subsys – to a group campaigning against the law. Critics say that a $500,000 donation from Insys to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy (ARDP) was made in an effort to boost a recently approved drug manufactured by the company based on a synthetic version of the active ingredient in marijuana. North Carolina hospital faces fentanyl lawsuit over patient incapacitated from pain patch overdose

A lawsuit filed on behalf of a North Carolina woman who was incapacitated after being treated with the powerful opioid painkiller fentanyl alleges that the woman was wrongfully administered the drug while being treated at a local hospital. Nearly three-quarters of fentanyl patch prescriptions issued in violation of FDA guidelines, new study finds

A new study conducted by Canadian researchers has found that nearly three-quarters of fentanyl pain patch prescriptions are issued to patients who had not previously been treated with opioid medications, putting them at risk of suffering a potentially fatal overdose. Food and Drug Administration regulations require doctors to prescribe the fentanyl patch only to patients who are opioid tolerant due to previous treatment with painkiller medications in order to reduce the risk of overdose. Scripps researchers say that they recently completed successful preclinical trials for the fentanyl vaccine and are working to develop a vaccine that could be used to treat patients who suffer fentanyl overdoses or other complications from the drug. Health experts say that increases in the use of prescription painkillers by soldiers and military veterans may increase their risk of turning to powerful opioids such as fentanyl. Increases in the number of injured soldiers due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as a nationwide increase in the rate of opioid painkiller prescriptions, could place troops at risk of fentanyl abuse or overdose.
