Fentanyl prescriptions to nursing home patients may create fatal overdose risks, study suggests

A new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) found that the fentanyl pain patch was the most commonly administered long acting opioid prescribed to opioid naïve nursing home patients. Because fentanyl is only intended for patients with chronic pain who have already developed opioid tolerance, the findings of this study suggest that nursing home patients may be at risk as a result of these inappropriate prescribing practices. Patients using the fentanyl pain patch or other prescription painkillers may face a greater risk of overdose or other side effects as a result of increased heat during the summer months, a Wisconsin physician is warning the public. Dr. Chris Eberlein—a physician at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin—says that patients using fentanyl or other opioid painkillers should exercise caution during warmer months in order to reduce their risk of an accidental overdose caused by extreme temperatures. North Carolina hospital faces fentanyl lawsuit over patient incapacitated from pain patch overdose

A lawsuit filed on behalf of a North Carolina woman who was incapacitated after being treated with the powerful opioid painkiller fentanyl alleges that the woman was wrongfully administered the drug while being treated at a local hospital. Dorothy Juanita Phillips died 18 months after she was treated with the fentanyl pain patch at the Alamance Health Care Center in Burlington, North Carolina. (more…)

Nearly three-quarters of fentanyl patch prescriptions issued in violation of FDA guidelines, new study finds

A new study conducted by Canadian researchers has found that nearly three-quarters of fentanyl pain patch prescriptions are issued to patients who had not previously been treated with opioid medications, putting them at risk of suffering a potentially fatal overdose. Food and Drug Administration regulations require doctors to prescribe the fentanyl patch only to patients who are opioid tolerant due to previous treatment with painkiller medications in order to reduce the risk of overdose. Scripps researchers say that they recently completed successful preclinical trials for the fentanyl vaccine and are working to develop a vaccine that could be used to treat patients who suffer fentanyl overdoses or other complications from the drug.
