A Pennsylvania pharmacy is facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the father of a man who died from a fentanyl overdose. Dale Albert filed a lawsuit against Sheeley’s Drug Store in Scranton, Pennsylvania after his son, Cody, died of an overdose from a fentanyl pain patch that was given to him by Zachary Ross, who had improperly obtained pain patches from Sheeley’s that were intended for his mother. A Kentucky doctor will spend one year in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally prescribing fentanyl and other opioid painkillers to her patients. Several of the patients who inappropriately received prescription painkillers from Clella Louise Hayes later died from overdoses caused by the drugs. (more…)
Insys Therapeutics – the manufacturer of the prescription fentanyl sublingual spray Subsys – has agreed to pay $2.9 million to settle a lawsuit filed in New Hampshire over the company’s marketing of the drug. Supporters of a proposed Arizona law that would decriminalize marijuana use have criticized a recent donation by Insys Therapeutics – the manufacturer of the fentanyl sublingual spray Subsys – to a group campaigning against the law. Critics say that a $500,000 donation from Insys to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy (ARDP) was made in an effort to boost a recently approved drug manufactured by the company based on a synthetic version of the active ingredient in marijuana. A new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) found that the fentanyl pain patch was the most commonly administered long acting opioid prescribed to opioid naïve nursing home patients. Because fentanyl is only intended for patients with chronic pain who have already developed opioid tolerance, the findings of this study suggest that nursing home patients may be at risk as a result of these inappropriate prescribing practices. Patients using the fentanyl pain patch or other prescription painkillers may face a greater risk of overdose or other side effects as a result of increased heat during the summer months, a Wisconsin physician is warning the public. Dr. Chris Eberlein—a physician at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin—says that patients using fentanyl or other opioid painkillers should exercise caution during warmer months in order to reduce their risk of an accidental overdose caused by extreme temperatures. A new study conducted by Canadian researchers has found that nearly three-quarters of fentanyl pain patch prescriptions are issued to patients who had not previously been treated with opioid medications, putting them at risk of suffering a potentially fatal overdose. Food and Drug Administration regulations require doctors to prescribe the fentanyl patch only to patients who are opioid tolerant due to previous treatment with painkiller medications in order to reduce the risk of overdose.
